Unity By David Chassin, Saturday June 28, 2008 Facing a long road to November Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton did what they had to yesterday in Unity New Hampshire: the made peace with each other. This was the turning point for many Democrats who have grown weary of the primary battle for the Democratic nomination. Nobody really blames either candidate for toughing it out to the end, and certainly the process seems to have made both candidates that much stronger.
It was a long overdue moment for those who are anxious to take on McCain. In spite of being a well-choreographed scene, a few hold outs didn't get the point. One attendee waived a Clinton sign chanting "Hillary" throughout Senator Obama's speech and stuff tissues in her ears while he spoke, as though his words might do her some harm. Senator Obama for his part, spoke glowingly of Hillary's efforts on behalf of American's.
This event comes soon after Obama made a largly symbolic $2300 contribution to the Clinton campaign to help her offset the significant debt she has incurred. However, some are unhappy about using new donations needed to win in November to pay off the $6 million debt to discredited pollster Mark Penn and the loans from Hillary herself.
But in the end, the Unity event achieved the intended purpose. Most people intereviewed there had very positive things to say about both Senators. That speaks well to the Party's ability to come together to achieve the common objective of taking back the White House.
The consensus is that Senator Obama has a difficult but certainly not impossible task ahead of him. He must convince the remaining holdout groups among Hillary's supporters that he is the right person for them.
Of particular interest to us Franklin County is his appeal to Latino voters. We will be watching the impression he makes today at the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials in Washington, D.C.
