Obama touts renewables as economic stimulus

In a town hall meeting in Charlotte NC, Senator Obama lays out his plan for resurrecting the US economic.

Barack Obama told voters that the US must invest in research that will create and keep jobs at home. In his prepared statement, he said "one place that will make an enornous difference is in a renewable energy policy that ends our addiction to foreign oil, provides real long-term relief from high fuel costs, and builds a green economy that could create up to 5 million jobs that can't be outsourced."

He also said that millions of jobs can be found in "rebuilding our schools, roads, bridges, and other critical infrastructure that needs repair."

Senator McCain in contrast has argued that further reductions in taxes are necessary to raise the economy out from it abysmal performance. He said the government "has grown 60 percent in the last eight years", referring to the growth in the government's size and spending presided over by Bush and Republican Congress.

McCain has sent out a policy paper that details a plan to balance the budget by the year 2013. But in his many years as a Senator, he has only rarely voted against an appropriations bill. Instead, McCain argues that "the only way to keep the budget balanced is successful reform of the large spending pressures in Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid," while not addressing the budget impact of the foreign wars and the current regressive tax policy.

In a press conference held Sunday Jason Furman, Obama's director of economic policy, said that McCain's plan "has essentially no ideas to get the economy going and create jobs in the short run, and has ideas about the long run that are rooted in a failed economic philosophy."
