Primary turn-out low By David Chassin, Wednesday August 20, 2008 The low turn-out is the only surprise in this year's primary. After nearly 60% of Franklin County voters turned out for relatively meaningless Presidential primary on February 19th, projections show that only about 40% of voters sent in their mail-in ballots in the August 19th primary.
With about 5000 of the 8000 ballots received counted, the low turn out suggests that mostly partisan voters took the time to show their preferences. The recent change to the top-two primary may be a factor as some voters may believe that the primary is still partisan, or harbor certain resentment toward the primary process in Washington State. Nonetheless, the partisan nature of the turnout is supported by the results in a number of important races.
In Franklin County George Fearing is expected to come away with at least 35% of votes in his bid for the 4th Congressional District seat. This is one of the best showings for a Democratic candidate for higher office. Governor Chris Gregoire received support from only 28% of Franklin County's voters as of the initial count.
Franklin County voters did show their loyal bi-partisan support to two long-time officials. Bill Grant received nearly 48% of the vote running against three other Republican candidates in the 16th Legistlative Distric.
But far and away the best return was for Neva Corkrum, who received nearly 62% of the votes in her re-election run for the Franklin County Commission.
The next ballot count is planned for 4:00 PM today, and about 3500 ballot remain to be counted.
Franklin County has about 20,000 registered voters, roughly 2000 of whom have declared at some point in the past a preference for Democratic candidates. Nearly 60% of voters are considered to have an undeclared or unknown partisan preference and 2/3 of these voters are considered swing voters.
