Palin's Situational EthicsBy David Chassin, Tuesday September 02, 2008The news of Bristol Palin's pregnancy obviously isn't good, but we have to wonder whether Sarah Palin really believes in abstinence education now. And what about choice, now that she has stated she is proud of her daughter's decision to keep the baby? Yes! You heard that right. She said "her decision". And we all thought Sarah Palin was running on a platform of taking away the right to decide such things, and not just from teenagers, but from all women of all ages, no matter the circumstances. Are we to understand that Sarah Palin's daughter gets to decide whether to keep her baby, but the rest of us don't?
Perhaps this isn't a case of extreme hypocrisy but merely one of failed parenting. If Sarah had been at home and tending to her children, like all good evangelical moms are wont to do, this would not have happened... if you believe their rhetoric.
Unfortunately, it is from Sarah Palin that we learn of how the real world works. In the real world, both mom and dad must work, and often don't have the time or energy to fully prepare their daughters against the dangers of unsupervised teenage boys.
In today's world, parents rely on overworked and underpaid teachers to serve as their proxies in such matters. And limiting the message to completely unrealistic and absurd statements like "just don't do it" and "God will take care of it" just doesn't work.
Bristol is proof positive none of that works.
And her mother thought it fitting to drag her daughter through this. What kind of mother puts her boundless ambition in front of the welfare of her own children?
It is so profoundly disturbing to see the obvious situational ethics that is driving Gov. Palin's moral decision. Sarah Palin's love of her sudden and completely undeserve fame is such that she is willing to sacrifice her daughter's and grandchild's privacy and dignity for the sake of her ambition.
Now there's family values at work for America! Send us your comments to Reader's Letters |
