For Obama and proud of it!!!By David Chassin, Friday October 10, 2008I have never been so glad as I am now that I'm a Democrat and not a Republican, because right now real Republicans are feeling pretty depressed and abandonned--either that or they're completely oblivious to the reality of the situation. If I were Republican, I'd be pretty confused right now. There was a time when, as a Republican, I would have been my patriotic duty to dislike Barack Obama because he lacked experience, his rhetoric lacked substance, he flip-flopped, and he was a celebrity. But then our heroic leader, John McCain, nominated Sarah Palin, who turned all of those Obama-negatives into Palin-positives.
The celeb status would have been especially hard for me as a true-red Republicans to swallow, what with Sarah's oh-so cutesy/hot babe demeanor, her six-pack abs husband, and that touching family life plus plucky personal story combo. And then there's People Magazine. Wow! What is an anti-Hollywood-celebrity Republican supposed to make of that?
But then we found out that before she opposed the Bridge to Nowhere she was all for it, that she didn't actually sell the state airplane on eBay, and that Alaska still leads the nation in earmarks dollars per citizen. It really didn't feel "right" when she justified it by saying that she requested fewer earmarks than other Alaskan politicians did. That's like saying "it's ok Your Honor, I wasn't going as fast as that other guy I was racing down the street before I ran over that grandma.".
But now I see this parade of real Republicans, the ones who were Republicans before the religious right kooks were told by their preachers that it was now ok to mix God and politics, and they're jumping ship faster than rats on a cold north-Atlantic night in April 1912.
First it was Kathleen Parker, that sharp-tongued columnist, who really aggravates me because she casually ignores the obvious to make a twisted point about how dumb liberals are and divinely inspired conservatives are. She basically said Sarah was the worst choice McCain could have made. Then, George F. Will's son Christopher went one step further and committed full-blown apostacy by declaring, God/Pup forgive him, he was voting for the best man, and that man was Barack Obama. I can't wait to hear the hate mail they're getting right now.
But, I'm not a Republican. Never was. I did not vote for Reagan, Bush I, Dole, or Bush II. There are a lot people who now say they're Democrats who voted for one or more of the above. You know who you are. Some of you even donated to their campaigns, so everybody knows who you are (bet you forgot about those pesky campaign donation database). For all but 2004, you're forgiven. For Bush II in 2004 there's no excuse in the world. Everything that's happened since then is your fault. No ducking that one.
As for me, I've never been so proud of my position as I am now. I feel vindicated and redeemed. Too bad that the world had to pay such a high price for me to have the rare privilege of saying "I told you so."
As for Barack Obama, I know he's the only man who stands a chance of fixing this royal screw up were in. We can only hope that he has the strength and intellect to deal with the mess he's going to be in charge of on January 21, 2009. There, but for the grace of God (and Sarah Palin) goes John McCain.
