The Perfect Financial StormBy Alan Corwin, Sunday October 26, 2008It was only a few months back when our esteemed classmate was echoing the Administration and candidate McCain's happy talk about the economy. He derided any fears of recession and characterized the gathering economic crisis as just a normal cyclical downturn (not a direct quote). How many of us still agree with that assessment?
It is simplistic to blame the crisis on the banks and Wall Street, though they certainly deserve a share of the blame. Here are some of the factors which, in my opinion, contributed to this mess - in no particular order: repeal of the Glass-Seagall Act; the energy crisis dating back to the 1970's; weak oversight by the SEC; unethical behavior by mortgage bankers; a consumer economy built on debt; too much leverage; the mistaken belief that real estate always goes up; Alan Greenspan's errors of judgment; the $10 billion a month cost of two wars; rampant speculation. And the list goes on.
Here's a quote from a money manager, editor of the HCM Market Letter:
Over the past three decades, an increasing amount of America's financial and intellectual capital has been devoted to speculative rather than productive activities betting on much but producing little. This is no accident - it was the result of tax and fiscal policies that rewarded certain types of investment (i.e. debt over equity).
He goes on to write:
Those policies should be redesigned to create the proper incentives to direct America's economic, intellectual, and creative energies toward rebuilding our physical infrastructure, cleaning our environment, rebuilding schools and neighborhoods, solving medical and scientific problems, and, most importantly, reducing our dependence upon fossil fuels
There's plenty of blame to go around... you, me, government at all levels, political bickering for which both Democrats and Republicans are responsible, pervasive greed, quick fixes instead of long-term solutions, misguided fiscal policy... the list goes on. Don't listen to anyone who cherry-picks from this list to divert attention from his/her own culpability. Send us your comments to Reader's Letters |
