End the new poll tax By David Chassin, Monday November 03, 2008 Long lines are being reported during early voting in several key states and questions are being raised about whether waiting in line for 6 hours isn't just another kind of poll tax for working class Americans. A poll tax is defined by Merriam-Webster as a tax of a fixed amount per person levied on adults and often linked to the right to vote. While voters aren't being asked to pay a fee for the right to vote, one has to wonder whether waiting in line for hours isn't just another fee.
Workers may get only an hour or two off of work, although their employers are not obliged to give them time. But in many states around the country, even that isn't enough. So for somebody who is working for minimum wage, having troubles making ends meet as it is, we should ask how much their vote is worth to them.
If after waiting in line for two hours, a worker leaves the line to get back to work, have we not just imposed a poll tax and denied them the right to vote on the basis that they are unable to pay the $50 or $100 cost?
We believe that the right to vote is a sacred right and this it cannot be denied to any America citizen except by a judge. We believe that long lines are denying thousands of Americans the right to vote and that those who are failing to remedy the situation and worse yet deliberately perpretating slow voting systems are committing voting rights violations. Commission of such acts should be prosecuted by jail where willfull and when negligent should be punished by fines.
Not until every America who is entitle to vote can vote in a timely manner can we be assured that democracy is secure. It will serve us no good to protect our great nation's borders from terrorists and other enemies if we continue to undermine the foundation upon which it is built: the right to vote.
Protect the right to vote: end the long lines.
