Yes we can and yes we didBy David Chassin, Wednesday November 05, 2008With Missouri and North Carolina still undecided, the result is a stunning 349 to 163 in favor of Barack Obama. I was in the press room at the Red Lion Inn in Pasco last night shortly before 8:00 PM when across the hall there was an explosion of shouts and yells.
We had done it at last!
Democratic attendees at last night's celebration expressed jubilation at having found their way in from the wilderness after 8 long years. But it took this young, vibrant and charismatic African-American junior senator from Illinois to show way back.
The consensus is that the Democratic Party owes a great deal to Barack Obama. His ideals certainly are emblematic of the very best that the party has to offer Americans. Some attendees were among those independents disappointed over the Republican failures, and the depressed and uncertain feeling among Republicans is palpable. But Candidate Obama understood which wounds of the American psyche were most in need of tending. President Obama will certainly heal them.
Opinions in the crowd varied widely as to the durability of this change, but many hoped that Republicans will be unable to recover any time soon from the damage the religious right and the neo-conservatives have done to the party that once stood for principles with which Democrats may have disagreed, but which they could respect.
One commonly voiced concern remains. Many local Democrats worry that the Democratic leadership of the House and Senate will commit the same grave errors that Republicans committed under Bush's leadership and overplay their hand. The widely held hope is the Obama's victory swept enough Democrats in that he can help steady the hand of less well-tempered Democrats and that his calm leadership style will keep a headstrong Democratic Congress from reaching beyond their grasp.
Meanwhile many parts of the country still suffer under the yoke of Republican fear-mongering and religious extremism.
