Fulfilling the Promise By David Chassin, Tuesday January 20, 2009 "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness." The Declaration of Independence, written 233 years ago by Thomas Jefferson, affirms the promise that our rights come from nature and not from men. These rights cannot be taken from us without our consent and we have the right to change our government if it fails to respect them or protect them.
On November 4th, 2008, we took America's future into our hearts and elected Barack Obama to be our next President. Although many Americans did not vote for him, today he is our 44th President of our United States, and today he has taken the oath to preserve and protect our Constitution.
But to many Americans Barack Obama's inauguration represents much more than a change of party or new ideas. Today our land is a multiracial and multiethnic nation. To the more than one third of Americans who consider themselves in the minority, the President represents the fulfillment of the American Dream promised to us so long ago.
On August 28th 1963 Martin Luther King Jr. stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and looked across to the Capital. He saw today's events unfolding before him and revived the promise of America, declaring
"I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
From that moment until today, American minorities have struggled to achieve the promise of those words.
Today we fulfill the promises of our Founding Fathers. Today, your mother's reassuring words "you too can be President" become reality. Today we are at last one Nation.
We are all truly Americans.
