16th LD caucus chooses 3 nominees to replace Grant By David Chassin, Saturday January 31, 2009 George Fearing, Rebecca Francik, and Laura Grant-Herriot will be presented to the County Commissioners of Benton, Columbia, Franklin and Walla Walla, who will appoint one of them to be Bill Grant's successor. This morning's caucus was chaired by Dwight Pelz, chairman of the Washington State Democratic Central Committee. A total of 66 Precinct Committee Officers, some elected in August's primary and some appointed since then, were present at the William A. Grant Water and Environment Center on the campus of Walla Walla Community College.
Ten candidates were present. Mary Campbell, Neva Corkrum, George Fearing, Rebecca Francik, Laura Grant-Herriot, Bill Gordon, Dale Johnson, Dante Montoya, Dick Morgan, and Yolanda Cortinas-Trout. Each was given 5 minutes to address the caucus. The speeches were well received and the PCOs were obviously excited about the choices before them. In her speech, Yolanda Cortinas-Trout bowed out of the race for health reasons.
In the first round of balloting, Laura Grant-Herriot and George Fearing took the lead with 18 and 17 votes each. In the run-off, George Fearing took the position of the first nominee with a majority 37 votes.
The second round of balloting saw Laura Grant-Herriot and Rebecca Francik lead with 23 and 17 votes respectively. In the run-off for the second position, Rebecca Francik prevailed with a majority 36 votes.
The third round of balloting ended with Laura Grant-Herriot and Dick Morgan in the top two with 27 and 18 votes respectively. The run-off gave Laura Grant-Herriot a single vote edge of 34 to take the third nomination.
After a formal presentation by Dwight Pelz, George, Rebecca and Laura will be considered by the County Commissioners and the winner will serve the balance of Bill Grant's two-year term.
