Whose side are you on?By David Chassin, Saturday March 14, 2009Every once in a while I'm asked why I'm a Democrat in an area that is so strongly Republican. Actually, how many Republicans live around me isn't what makes me a Democrat. But it does make me more keenly aware of why I'm a Democrat. That's not to say I don't respect my Republican friends, because I do.
It's just that they don't see things at all the way I do, and they try to "convert" me all the time. They try to show me the error of my ways. It's sort of like the way the Church used to try to convince my Jewish ancestors of the error of their beliefs, only without all the accessories.
But I really do see things differently. Take the financial meltdown. My more reasonable Republican friends see this as an unfortunate market correction. "So some people lost everything, including their homes. Yes, that's a shame, but there's nothing that can be done", they say. (Those with a less firm grip on reality blame Democrats for forcing good banks to make bad loans. I'm pretty sure they're the same ones who think Sarah Palin would make a good president because she's just like them.)
But I'm not interested in who's to blame or why it happened. There'll be plenty of people smarter than me to figure that out. Hopefully some of them will be on jury duty when they do it.
The true test for me is how we deal with the consequences. That's where the Democrat in me stands up to be counted.
You see, the Republicans are always concerned about how to make money in the capital markets. They think only of the investments and the businesses. They argue that if the government doesn't protect businesses the economy will tank. And by protect, they really mean protect those poor mom and pop businesses from all those big bad workers who exploit them.
But as a Democrat, I'm thinking more about the workers. Why? Because I know that my 401K is invested in companies that employ workers and workers are what makes money. Businesses make money because workers make them money. Only Bernie Madoff invests in businesses that don't employ workers.
In fact when I look at the stock market, I know that for every loser there is a winner. And when I think about who got the raw deal, I know whose side I'm rooting for.
That's because ultimately I expect to have to account for all the things I've done, good and bad. I'm pretty sure that taking the side of the people who make money off of other people's hard work is not as good as taking the side of the people who make money by working for it.
So all you holier-than-thou Republicans, think about what you'll say to your God when he stands between you and an eternity of harp-filled bliss and asks you any one of these questions:
How did you make all that money?
Who did you help with all that money?
What did the people who used all your money do with it?
It is said that Abraham Lincoln thought the outcome of the Civil War was not a question of whether God was on the Union's side, but whether the Union was on God's side.
