Letter to Congressman HastingsBy David Chassin, Sunday August 16, 2009Dear Congressman Hastings, I am writing to you as the Chairman of the Franklin County Democratic Central Committee regarding health insurance reform on behalf of the thousands of voters in Franklin County who voted for and continue to support President Obama because they want to improve the way Americans get health care. While we harbor no illusions that you will support a bill the Democrats put forward, we dispute your claim that your constituents do not support change. Democrats are your constituents too and although we are not a majority in Franklin County, you do have a duty to represent all the people of the 4th Congressional District of Washington, not just those who voted for you.
In particular, we believe that
1. the last fall's election result was a clear message that reform is demanded by the American people;
2. Congress has a duty to fix the obvious problems with the system;
3. as a member of Congress your duty is not to block every idea that comes to the floor but to ensure that the plan that is adopted is as good as possible;
4. you also have a duty to the truth as it is lived every day by your constituents, not the truth as put forward by a vocal minority of K Street money-launderers and insurance industry lobbyists who only have their own narrow political and business interests in mind; and
5. this nation's interest and your party's interest are linked: if you fail to pass reform you will be blamed for the failure of the plan at the next election.
We hope that you will spend your time this August to rise above the clamor of disrupted town-hall meetings, ignore the voices that you naturally agree with, and give due consideration to the consequences of inaction on your part:
1. if you do nothing now, health coverage will increase to more than 30% of GDP within a few short years, bankrupting not only individuals, but businesses, state and local governments, leaving only the federal government with the means to solve the problem. which is certainly not what you want;
2. if you do nothing now millions more Americans will be subjected to the insurance industry's present system of health care rationing and prevented from obtaining the regular and urgent care they need;
3. if you do nothing now millions more health care providers will abandon the call to serve because the current reimbursement system is so badly broken; and
4. if you do nothing now America will complete its imminent collapse into a third-world economy where a very few rich people have access to state-of-the-art care and the vast majority of Americans are left to gaze through the glass hospital walls from the outside with only a dream of what their lives could have been but for wont of affordable health care.
We are calling upon you and your colleagues to stop simply saying "no" to everything. Remember that last fall's election results were a very clear message that you have had since 1994 to address this issue, you did nothing, and the Republican Party's ideas are now soundly rejected. Using K Street advocacy groups to create the illusion of a groundswell of opposition based on lies and dissimulations isn't going to work either. The tide of history is against you and you must now choose between your true duty to your constituents and your perceived duty to your party. Choose wisely.
I would like to also request the opportunity to meet with you in person to discuss the matter further before the end of the August recess.
Respecfully,
David P. Chassin, Chairman Franklin County Democratic Central Committee
