Obama: Nuclear power worth considering

At a meeting with US governors last Friday Barack Obama said nuclear power is "not a panacea."

Noting that nuclear power plants do not emit any greenhouse gases Senator Obama concluded that the United States should invest in research into whether nuclear waste can be safely stored. Last July Obama said he thought "we should explore nuclear power as part of the energy mix." However, last December he also indicated that he was "not a nuclear energy proponent."

But in an article in the Independent, James Lovelock, the scientist who originally proposed the Gaia hypothesis, said that nuclear power was the only green solution to address global climate change.

Lovelock suggests that reticence to adopt nuclear power, particularly in the United States stems from an irrational fear that is largely fed by "Hollywood-style hype, Green lobbies and the media." He asserts that the objection to nuclear power is wrongheaded and that whatever potential risk nuclear energy presents pales in comparison to the real and immediate threat to world food supply that climate change-induced wild weather poses.

Obama's opponent, John McCain, is proposing a "big push" to build up to 45 new nuclear generating facilities by the year 2030. However, according to an EIA projection, 37 of the nuclear reactors operating today were brought on line before 1975.

Such a modest effort is unlikely to even keep up with the replacement requirement, and does not fundamentally address the need to reduce energy imports, limit CO2 emissions, and meet the growing demand for energy forecasts by the EIA.
