FOX not-newsBy David Chassin, Sunday June 29, 2008FOX has a long history of being over-the-top biased, but they're topping themselves now and advertisers will notice. FOX news was conceived in an era when news tried to be objective and unbiased. To new-age anti-intellectual conservatives though, this was perceived as a liberal bias because the major media outlets would point out obvious contradictions and factual errors, and refuse to repeat conservative lies and falacies unqualified. For conservatives, the only way to promulgate their agenda was to have a news outlet that wouldn't be so squeemish about lying and deceiving their audience.
Hence FOX.
Advertisers didn't see a problem with this. Advertisers whose politics agreed with or were supported by FOX opinions were early supporters, but it didn't take long for FOX to build a loyal following among voters who supported Dubya. Mainstream advertisers were no fools, they saw an opportunity to target an gullible audience with a well-defined viewpoint. FOX had it made.
But as goes Dubya's failed brand of politics, so goes FOX's fortunes.
The recent attacks on Obama based on non-issues like his religion, his appearance, and the "slips" like calling him "Osama" or joking about killing him, or speculating about how his exchanges with Michele could be related to terrorism, or referring to Michele as his "baby mama" are beyond indecent. Clearly FOX knows no limits.
Often, after these incidents, FOX offers an apology. But apologies without changes in behavior are meaningless. If anything, they provide FOX an opportunity to repeat the slanders.
FOX has every right to be as extreme as it wants to be. However, the world is changing and we believe that FOX has overplayed its hand. Many advertisers are getting uncomfortable having their products so closely associated with FOX brand of extremism. Where logic and appeals to reason and decency are likely to fail, money will talk.
FOX will change their tone when the advertisers ditch them. Send us your comments to Reader's Letters |
